About me

Hello.

In many ways I am completely normal (no sniggering at the back). I am married and have two lovely children. My husband works full time, I stay at home and look after the two afore-mentioned lovely children.

I’m autistic and gardening really helps me to relax as much as I can relax, which isn’t much at all, and the plants don’t need me to have a conversation with them. The more I dig, the happier I am.

I love most sorts of garden, but I’m especially interested in herbs, organic gardening, fruit and veg, edible flowers, cottage gardens, wildlife gardens, self-sufficiency gardening and gardening with children (so they don’t get so bored when I drag them around nurseries and garden centres).

There are lots of other things that keep me sane like hanging out with my dog, running, cooking, and drinking tea.

Our long-term plan is to emigrate to Canada (I am the only one in this house that isn’t a Canadian citizen), buy a little house on a couple of acres of land and become more self-sufficient-er. This will involve lots of digging and probably some ducks and bees. I probably think about this too much and forget to do things like clean.

Please feel welcome to follow my blog if you like the sound of that, and if your blog is similar then let me know so I can follow you too. I am crap at photography so you might just have to squint at my blurry, rubbish photos and imagine how awesome my garden looks.

Endless love to my husband and children for putting up with me.

Love,
The Digger

  1. Gardening and growing things are very good for the soul. Having a dream of self-sufficiency and a smallholding is wonderful and I am sure you will achieve it when the time is right.

    • Thank you 🙂 I’m happiest when I’m gardening, but have to strike a balance so I don’t bore my children so much that they never want to see a trowel ever again.

  2. That’s a great bio. Moving to Canada sounds extremely exciting, not least because I bet there is just tons more space and clean air than over here to enjoy. Look forward to reading more of your blog 🙂

    • Thanks 🙂 Yes, Canada is a great place. Lots of fresh air and open space. They do have a shorter growing season but I’ll have space for a massive polytunnel, and there’s other great stuff like Tim Hortons, Thanksgiving, ice hockey, and perogies.

  3. I love what you have written here and can so relate to your words. Gardening really can help to unravel a troubled mind, or to soothe it at the very least. I think we all have ways of trying to cope; I know I have many, so I am glad that working the soil helps you.
My house is usually in total turmoil inside- but I don’t worry about it too much. I get to clean up eventually!
Thank you so much for sharing your story. I look forward to following your blog.

  4. I am right there with everything you said…my garden is my escape. My kids are older now.but what helped me get through their teen years ( which was not too long ago-still healing-lol) was my garden! It kept me sane and not worrying all the time…well, I still worry but not as much when I garden. I hope you get your acreage…I am still waiting and hoping for mine! You have a beautiful blog and I wll visit more often for when you find other ‘kindred” spirits over the cyber fence…you return..and with a pot of tea!
